Is it beginning to look at lot like Christmas in your house? Did you hang up your stockings along the mantle place or stairway banisters? What recipes will you be adding to the holiday feast that you will cook and share with your family who are near and zooming with those that are far away?
While our family celebrated Chanukah, which my children loved when little, they were always exceptionally excited because after Chanukah was over they got to celebrate Christmas as well. We had lovely neighbors, who were childless, and looked upon our kids as their adopted offspring. Not only did our children go tree shopping with their ‘aunt’ and ‘uncle’, but they helped trim the tree, feasted on Christmas cookies, and received Christmas presents and stocking stuffers in their own stockings, which had their names embroidered upon them. Essentially our children had a double holiday!
I have always been of the belief that it is broadening to be exposed to other people’s holidays. We also included many of our children's classmates in Chanukah candle-lighting, potato pancakes and jelly donuts, along with the telling of the Chanukah story.
Our children would return home on a ‘sugar’ high from Christmas cookies and sing Christmas carols that they had sung with our neighbors. ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’, ’Deck the Halls’, and ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ were some of their favorites. While I have never had a good voice, I often sang with them until we were all laughing. ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ by Brenda Lee was a song my mother liked, as well as ‘It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year’ by Andy Williams. However, my all time favorite has always been the very moving, ‘Silent Night, Holy Night’. It would bring tears to my eyes as the feeling of ‘holiness’ would light me up and give me goose bumps.
After all, the holiday season is about connection, acceptance, love, spirituality and joy that unites us during the holiday season.
